Thank you for your interest in the University of Calgary’s Evict Radon research study. We ask you to please review and consider the following information about this study before you decide to take part or not.
The PURPOSE of this study is to understand how high indoor air home radon levels relate to certain home features, so researchers at the University of Calgary (Aaron Goodarzi, PhD and Fintan Stanley, BSc) can work towards developing solutions to Canada’s radon problem. This is a Citizen Scientist project, and we are looking for Albertans who are willing to purchase a radon test device to test their homes all across our province.
If you are interested, WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO is simply to let us know about a few metrics of the home you want to have tested (in the survey following this page) and then obtain a long term (90 day) radon test kit from our certified radon testing partner (link to a secure webstore will follow survey completion). If you are not interested in study participation, radon test kits are still widely available for sale online and in retail outlets, and we do not endorse any specific commercial entity.
Your EVICT RADON TEST KIT includes (for a single cost of CAD$60.00) shipping to your Albertan home, a long term alpha track tester device, instructions, a pre-paid shipping label to the central radon test device testing lab for North America (there is only one) and that lab’s fee. You should place your radon test in your home for a minimum of 90 days somewhere between now and the end of April. If you are planning to purchase multiple radon tests for different properties, please fill out a different survey for each purchase. It is important to note that, there are NO DIRECT BENEFITS to you from taking part in this study, other than receiving your home’s radon reading. Your participation will, however, contribute to the knowledge about the presence of radon in Alberta residences and may contribute to developing ways of reducing radon exposure. There are NO HARMS associated with taking part in this study. Once your test is complete, you will return the test device by mail using the pre-paid shipping label, as per the instructions you’ll find in the box. Within a few weeks, your homes radon test results will be returned to you directly, with your radon reading being shared with University researchers. If testing reveals high radon levels, the decision to “mitigate” (i.e. reduce) the radon and the costs associated with that mitigation will be up to you.
PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY. All information entered in the following survey will be kept confidential and stored in secured servers in Canada, subject to Canadian privacy laws. Your data will never be shared with any third party and, once linked to your homes radon reading, will be anonymized so that you can never be personally identified. It will then be used by the researchers in publications and presentations. Your specific home address will never be published in any format, and specific homes and neighbourhoods are never linked to given radon readings. We take exceptional measures to ensure your privacy is maintained throughout this process. If you have any questions or concerns or, if at any point you wish to withdraw from our study and remove your data, please us at contact email@example.com.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE TEST DEVICE: Radon testing in Canada must be managed by C-NRPP (Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program) certified professionals. Prior to selecting a test device for this study, the University evaluated a number of products currently on the market and determined that the “Long Term Radon Test Kit (Alpha Track)” offered by RadonWest was the best fit to offer the most scientifically reliable results to all parties. This does not, however, constitute an endorsement by the University of RadonWest or its products. The University cannot certify the quality or reliability of any equipment sold by RadonWest. In addition, the University or the leaders of this study do not benefit in any way from the sale of test kits and have no financial relationship with RadonWest. The researchers (Aaron Goodarzi and Fintan Stanley) have absolutely no financial relationship with any other radon testing or mitigation retail or industrial entity. Information from the home metric survey is not shared with RadonWest or any 3rd party.
By proceeding to the NEXT step, you are agreeing to the information we have explained above. You also agree that you are 18 or over, and have permission from the occupants to radon test this property. Once your survey questionnaire is complete, you will have another chance to either accept of decline the submission of the survey to researchers. Submitting the survey is taken as an indication of your consent to participate in this study. We thank you in advance for your time.
Ok, let's begin!
